UPDATED A Montgomery County firefighter died on duty Friday, according to a county fire spokesman.

Charles “Rick” Gentilcore was found unresponsive about 3:30 p.m., said Pete Piringer, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services.

Gentilcore was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he died.

“The MCFRS family has incurred a great loss,” Piringer said on his telephone news system.

Gov. Larry Hogan has ordered the state flag to be lowered to half staff in honor of Gentilcore.

The Burtonsville Volunteer Fire Department has posted more about Gentilcore on its website, here.

A number of tweets expressed sadness over Gentilcore’s passing.
