Montgomery County Braces for Mail-In Primary Election
With Maryland’s presidential primary election set for Tuesday, many mail-in ballots were delayed in reaching voters across Montgomery County.
All registered voters in the county were scheduled to receive a mail-in ballot by May 22 in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Maryland’s presidential primary was originally scheduled for April 28 before Gov. Larry Hogan postponed the election.
Despite the initial delay, local election officials believe that all of the ballots have been distributed throughout the county.
“Our understanding is that all registered voters have had their ballots mailed to them,” Montgomery County Board of Elections spokesman Gilberto Zelaya said.
Zelaya noted that the elections office has received many calls from voters that made mistakes filling out their mail-in ballots. As of Friday afternoon, at least 250 ballots in Montgomery County were unsigned before they were mailed or dropped off. The board of elections is reaching out to voters that forgot to sign their ballots and offering them an opportunity to correct the mistake, Zelaya said.

Ballots that are postmarked before or on June 2 will be counted by the board of elections. Voters can text BOX to 777-88 to find the nearest of seven drop box locations to place their ballots throughout the county. The deadline to place a ballot in one of the drop boxes is 8 p.m. Tuesday night.
After dropping off or mailing in a ballot, voters can check the status of their ballot by texting CHECK to 777-88.
