Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will activate snow emergency plan at 5 p.m. on Jan. 21.

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett has declared a snow emergency beginning at 5 p.m. on Jan. 21.

The State of Maryland has also designated a snow emergency. Under a snow emergency, it is illegal to park vehicles along designated snow emergency routes and they will be towed. Vehicle owners will be responsible for all towing and impoundment fees and will also be subject to fines and penalties.

It is also illegal to drive on snow emergency routes without snow tires, mud/snow radials or tire chains.

During a snow emergency, taxi cabs operating in the County are allowed to charge $2.50 extra per trip.

Prominent red and white signs designate certain roads as snow emergency routes that are kept clear throughout storms for police, fire and other emergency vehicles. Both the State of Maryland and Montgomery County have designated snow emergency routes.
