Montgomery Council Unanimously Passes Small Cell Antenna Regs
The Montgomery County Council unanimously approved new small-cell antenna regulations Tuesday.
The regulations have been controversial among residents who object to the antennas as unsightly. State and federal laws do not allow local governments from disallowing the antennas in residential neighborhoods.
Councilmember George Leventhal had hoped the council would adopt separate regulations — one set for commercial areas and one set for neighborhoods. The council rejected his request.
The regulations ultimately passed unanimously.

Reflecting the controversy that has surrounded the regulations, Councilmember Nancy Floreen said: “We could take the view that we do nothing until June 26 because someone will misread something. Or someone will misinterpret something. Let’s give our residents a little bit of credit.”
She noted the concerns that have been raised by the issue.
“This is our world, and we have to adjust, and our residents expect us to. And frankly, residential service is highly relevant to our residents,” she said. “This is the wave of the future and we have an obligation to serve all of our residents.”
