Montgomery College Awarded $5 Million for Cybersecurity Program
Montgomery College was awarded a $5.6 million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Labor.
In 2015, the U.S. Department of Labor announced the availability of approximately $100 million in America’s Promise Job-Driven Grants to develop and grow regional partnerships between workforce agencies, education and training providers and employers in various industries such as information technology, healthcare and advanced manufacturing.
The grant program is designed to increase opportunities for American workers through tuition-free training for high-skilled occupations and industries.
“In our economy, companies will go where they can find highly talented people so our jobs go overseas,” said Dr. Sanjay Rai, senior vice president for academic affairs at Montgomery College.”This grant is trying to make the region competitive so that more companies would like to come and relocate here.”
The grant money will also allow both Frederick Community College and Prince George’s Community College to partner with Montgomery College. The partnership will allow all three schools to provide short-term trainings aimed at providing a pipeline of skilled IT and cybersecurity workers for local companies.
Also partnering with Montgomery College is WorkSource Montgomery Inc, the workforce development resource for Montgomery County businesses and career seekers. WorkSource Montgomery will serve as lead on this American Promise Grant, according to a press release.
“Montgomery County has become a major hub for high-paying careers, including those in IT and cybersecurity,” said WorkSource Montgomery CEO Dr. Ellie Giles in a statement. “These industries have grown so rapidly and the America’s Promise grant enhances local talent to meet the new demand. We are looking forward to supporting Montgomery College in this endeavor.”
