Montgomery and State COVID-19 Positivity Rates Remain Low, Hospitalizations Climb

Montgomery County COVID-19 Statistics

Friday morning the Maryland Department of Health reported 17,568 cumulative cases of COVID-19 in Montgomery County, which is an increase of 171 from the 17,397 cases reported Thursday.

Since the first case in March, 750 county residents have died from COVID-19. No new deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.  More Montgomery County residents have died due to COVID-19 than any other jurisdiction in the state. Prince George’s has lost 714 residents, the second-highest number.

The positivity rate of 3.66% reported Friday is a slight increase of 0.02% since Thursday. This is the 17th straight day the rate remained below 4% in the county.

Maryland COVID-19 Statistics

As of Friday morning, there have been 88,346 confirmed cases throughout the state. That is an increase of 1,169 cases in the last 24 hours. Montgomery County makes up 15% of the new cases statewide, down from a high of over 30% in May. COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 3,362  Marylanders, five since Thursday.

Currently, 590 Marylanders are hospitalized with COVID-19, which is five more than Thursday. Statewide hospitalizations have risen 53% since July 13 when 386 patients were hospitalized. Of the patients currently in the hospital, 128 are in intensive care, which is 11 less than Thursday.

 

The health department reported a testing positivity rate of 4.54% Friday, which is a slight decrease of 0.03% from Thursday’s rate of 4.57%. The rate has remained below 5% for five weeks since June 26.

Statewide, a total of 27,055 cases and 1,375 deaths involve the state’s African American community.

Here are the statewide statistics as of Friday, July 31. The first column is for the number of cases. The next column is the number of deaths, which is in parentheses. The second number in that column is the number of probable deaths.
