MoCo’s Got Talent Student Winners Announced

The talented youth of Montgomery County took The Fillmore by storm at the MoCo’s Got Talent finals Sunday.

More than 120 students participated this year, and five students and student groups took home first place prizes, Recreation Specialist Marhonda Williams said.

At only 12 years old, first-place singer Kelvin Dukes “blew everyone away, not only with his talent but also with his personality,” Recreation Specialist Opal Burgess said. “He was infectious. The entire room was just smiling.” Dukes sang Rihanna’s popular song “Love on the Brain.” 

“It was very diverse,” Burgess said. Step dance and traditional South Asian dance were both represented. Members of one competing dance team came from all over the county, not just one school.   

The five first-place winners of 2018 are:

First Place Dance Winner

The Paint Branch Eclectic Steppers won a prize package including $100 for dance supplies, a professional choreography consultation, and performance opportunities at the Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival.

First Place Musician Winner

Justin Wang of Robert Frost Middle School won a prize package including studio recording coaching and time and performance opportunities at the Silver Spring Concert Series & Strawberry Festival and the Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival.

First Place Vocalist Winner

Kelvin Dukes of Banneker Middle School won a prize package including vocal coaching and studio recording time and performance opportunities at the Silver Spring Concert Series & Strawberry Festival and the Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival.

First Place Visual Arts Winner — Middle School

Larisa Kachko of Rosa Parks Middle School won a prize package including $100 towards art supplies, an exhibit at Black Rock Center for the Arts, an art class gift certificate from Montgomery County Recreation, and an invitation to the Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival.

First Place Visual Arts Winner — High School

Ana Gutierrez of Winston Churchill High School won a prize package including $100 towards art supplies, an exhibit at Black Rock Center for the Arts, an art class gift certificate from Montgomery County Recreation, and an invitation to Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival.
