Mobile Market Rolling Through Montgomery College Campuses
In an effort to address food insecurity among its college community, Montgomery college teamed up with the Capital Area Food Bank to sponsor a program titled, “Mobile Market.”
The Mobile Market provides fresh fruits, vegetables, and other foods on campus at no cost.
Food distribution began in September and since its launch, the markets have “made a significant impact,” according to market co-organizer, Benita Rashaw.
“After only four markets, we have distributed over 18,000 pounds of food to over 900 people,” she said. “Nearly 600 of them were students which has impacted 3700 household members.”
The Mobile Market Program is a part of the college’s “Fuel for Success: Nourishing the Mind, Body and Spirit” initiative which aims to help students who are having difficulty accessing food and/or lacks a safe and stable place to live.
While the market is available for faculty and community members, students are the top priority.
“The overall goal of the Market is to provide a way to address food insecurity among our College community, specifically with MC students. Research tells us that when students have proper nutrition they have the ‘fuel for success,’ Rashaw said.
Food availability is first-come, first-serve.
