Minorities Discuss 2017 Business Priorities with Elected Officials

Establishing goals and priorities for 2017 was the main focus at the 16^th Annual Minority Legislative Breakfast in early Thursday.

The breakfast was a joint effort organized by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the African American Chamber of Commerce and the Asian American Political Alliance.

“This is an annual event to put forth small business goals, objectives and initiatives that we would like to see happen in the state of Maryland and in Montgomery County in particular,” said Raul Medrano, board member, The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Organizers say this event is a way to have elected officials that represent the County at the federal, state and local levels present to hear legislative issues that have an impact on the minority business community.

“Some things we’re concerned about is more access to procurement opportunities, especially at the state level for minority businesses in particular,” said Medrano.

Officials in attendance included U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, Congressmen John Delaney and John Sarbaney and Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner, just to name a few.

“I think it is so important that we hear from Asian, Latino and African American communities about issues their concerned about that we deal with it,” said State Senator Susan Lee. “The minority and the immigrant communities are the fastest growing communities in all of Montgomery County and Maryland and we have a lot of issues and challenges.”
