Mini Maker Faire Set For Sept. 29 in Silver Spring
Montgomery County is teaming up with KID (Kids International Discovery) Museum to host the Silver Spring Mini Maker Faire Sunday, Sept. 29 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building, located at the corner of Ellsworth Dr. and Fenton Street in downtown Silver Spring. The faire will feature hands-on activities and innovative projects created by inventors, hackers, crafters, artists and “do-it-yourselfers” of all kinds.
The goal of the festival is to demonstrate creative and unusual pursuits to inspire others to explore their own curiosity and to make something new and different. The Mini Maker movement encourages adults and children to make things, including new inventions, tools or gadgets, which can often be completed with reusable materials or household items.
The faire will feature food, performances, a series of short talks from “inventors in our midst” and many hands-on projects for adults and kids of all ages. More than 60 activity booths will have projects ranging from young maker projects for school children to the grown up version of invented technology from NASA.
A few of the projects and activities include:
- A homemade Whack-a-Mole game using Arduino;
- Trebuchet Pumpkin Chunkin by Discovery Communications;
- 3D digitization and replicating;
- Edible urban garden from DC Central Kitchen;
- Kinetic art and wearable art;
- Robot tic tac toe;
- Aluminum Aerogami;
- Model rockets by the National Association of Rocketry; and
- Astronaut gloves and tools and make-your-own rover/lunar buggy with NASA.

“Our kids need more encouragement to follow their curiosity and be innovative problem solvers,” said KID Museum Founder and CEO Cara Lesser. “The Mini Maker Faire celebrates working with raw materials, engaging kids’ minds and helping them to become critical thinkers.”
