Mikulski Expresses Frustration with WMATA in Letter to BOD Chair
U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski today sent a letter to Mortimer Downey, chair of the Board of Directors for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), with questions regarding Metro safety, financial and leadership following this week’s smoke incident.

“I am very frustrated with the pace in which the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) is correcting its myriad of problems. There quite clearly is a void of leadership.
“Monday morning’s commute turned into pandemonium in Northern Virginia with three separate smoke events in the tunnel between Foggy Bottom and Rosslyn stations on the Blue, Orange and Silver Lines. Fortunately, no one was killed, injured or trapped. However, it has been four months since the deadly incident on the Yellow Line. Why are these smoke events persisting?
“I understand the Board of Directors is meeting tomorrow. I request that you formally respond to the following questions:
“1. Why are these smoke events persisting?
“2. What is your plan to prevent these occurrences and improve the safety of Metro?
“3. Are there additional safety measures being implemented for the hot summer months?
“4. When will Metro name a new CEO?
“5. Does Metro have a cash flow problem?
“6. When will Metro complete the Federal Transit Administration’s financial management corrective action plan?
“7. What will the impact be of the House Republican proposal to reduce the federal contribution to $75 million?
“Thank you for your immediate attention to my request.”
