U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.), Chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, will continue her Maryland Jobs Tour at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) today at 1:30 p.m. She will be joined by NIST Director Dr. Patrick Gallagher and Dr. Tim Foecke in touring the Center for Automotive Lightweighting at the NIST in Gaithersburg, to see first-hand research into new manufacturing materials to help America’s automotive industry build lighter, more fuel efficient cars.

Following their tour, Senator Mikulski and Dr. Gallagher will meet with NIST employees to announce how the Consolidated Appropriations Act supports federal employee jobs at NIST and the mission they carry out for research and innovation jobs across Maryland and the nation.

NIST is an agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce, supporting more than 3,000 Maryland jobs. The mission of NIST is to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life. NIST develops the measurement methods, standards, and testing procedures that are the scientific foundation for many of the nation’s critical technologies.
