Middle School Student Brings Knife to School at Kingsview
A Kingsview Middle School student brought a knife to school today (April 29), according to Principal Jimmy D’Andrea in an email notification to parents.
D’Andrea writes in his note that the student displayed the knife at a bus stop and on the bus this morning.
Another student alerted administrators, D’Andrea said, and police and security were notified.
“The SRO [School Resource Officer] reported to Kingsview Middle School to assist in the investigation,” D’Andrea said. “During the investigation, it was discovered that the student did in fact have a knife in his possession. The student was detained and the knife was confiscated by the SRO.”
There were no injuries reported and no information about why the student brought the knife to school was released.
“There were no threats made or no one was in danger, but the students who came forward are to be commended,” said Dana Tofig, a spokesperson for Montgomery County Public Schools. “That is exactly what is supposed to happen.”
Throughout the day, D’Andrea said staff was speaking to all students at the school about the incident and emphasizing the importance of telling an adult immediately. He said it was important for parents to talk to their kids about the seriousness and danger of bringing any kind of weapon to school.
“We take safety very seriously and need our children to rely on the support and expertise of adults when dealing with situations like this,” D’Andrea said.
According to Montgomery County Public Schools policy, weapons of any kind may not be brought to school. “Students will be subjected to severe disciplinary action in such cases, possibly including suspension and expulsion,” D’Andrea said in his email message.
