The Mid Atlantic Jazz Festival celebrated its 10th year this past weekend at Rockville’s Hilton Hotel.

A renewal of the former East Coast Jazz Festival, this three-day event showcases the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area’s renowned jazz artists, up-and-coming acts and student ensembles, as well as popular touring musicians.

The festival was developed by a committee comprised of arts citizens and professionals that was convened by the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County. Its mission mirrors that of the Fish Middleton Jazz Scholarship Fund, which produced the original East Coast Jazz Festival: to assist emerging jazz artists in their development, offer a broader platform for the presentation of jazz and ensure the genre continues to be taught in schools.

This year’s festival featured an extensive roster of performers including the Branford Marsalis Quartet, Freddie Hendrix, who performed a tribute to the late jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, and Chelsey Green, the winner of a 2017 Montgomery County Executive’s Award for Excellence in the Arts & Humanities.

Montgomery Community Media will air a show on the festival later this year.
