Metro Announces New Escalator Projects at Georgia Avenue – Petworth and Glenmont, Work Begins March 21
Metro will begin the process of installing new escalators at two Metrorail stations: Georgia Ave-Petworth and Glenmont. To accelerate the project timeline and reduce customer impact, Metro will temporarily close the side of each entrance where the escalator replacement work is taking place. As a result, Metro’s contractor, KONE, can replace two adjacent escalators at the same time, effectively cutting the duration of the project in half.

Temporary closure begins Monday, March 21:
- Two escalators will be replaced at the station entrance located on the east side of Georgia Ave NW. The entrance will be temporarily closed for approximately 45 weeks to accommodate construction.
- Customers may access the station via the west side entrance, located directly across Georgia Ave NW.
- The current escalators were installed when the station opened in 1999.
- Metro has already installed five new escalators at Georgia Ave-Petworth Station.
Glenmont west side entrance

- Two escalators will be replaced at the station entrance located on the west side of Georgia Avenue. The entrance will be temporarily closed for approximately 35 weeks to accommodate construction.
- Customers will have access to the station via the east-side entrance, located on the opposite side of Georgia Avenue. Signs will be posted to direct customers who use the west Park & Ride Garage.
- The street elevator, located on the west side of Georgia Avenue, will remain in service.
- The current escalators were installed when the station opened in 1998.
