Memorial Day Travel Expected to Set Record for Washington Area
1.05 Million Washington Area Residents Expected to Travel
Do you have plans to get away this Memorial Day weekend? If so, you are going to have a lot of company on local roads.
The auto club, AAA Mid-Atlantic, is projecting a record number of Washington area residents will take a trip of 50 miles or more this holiday weekend. AAA predicts 1,053,400 residents, an increase of 5% from last year, will travel for Memorial Day getaways.
AAA has been tracing and tracking Memorial Day leisure travel trends and volumes since 2001.
“For the second year in a row, more than one million Washington metro area residents will travel during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.” said John Townsend II, AAA Mid-Atlantic’s manager of public and government affairs.
The autoclub warns motorists to expect delays on key roads as nearly nearly 90 percent of the 1.05 Million travelers will reach their destination by car. The graph below, from INRIX, shows the peak travel date and time for each of the major area highways.
