The Owner of Mel’s Rink Responds to Letter from County Executive (PHOTO)

melsrinkUPDATED Jan. 8 Mel’s Rink may be moving to a new location.

In an email dated Jan. 7th, Poolesville resident Marc Kohn says he appreciates County Executive Ike Leggett’s personal interest in Mel’s Rink, and Kohn says he would like to meet with county officials to discuss relocating the backyard ice rink that was built in memory of his daughter. So far, there’s been no word on when that meeting will take place.

“It wasn’t my intention to  make it a public place,” Kohn writes. “I had no idea so many Poolesville kids would show up.”

Earlier this week, Kohn temporarily closed the rink after receiving a notification of violation from county officials, and a personal letter from the county executive.

In Leggett’s letter dated Jan. 5th, the county executive expressed his appreciation for Kohn’s vision for the rink and all the time and effort that went into building it.

“I would be happy to explore partnering with you to relocate the ice rink to a more suitable location,” wrote Leggett. “This would ensure that lighting, parking and the health of the public are protected while they enjoy the rink.”

County inspectors issued a notice of violation to Kohn on Dec. 30th noting that a recreational facility, such as the rink, is not permitted in the Agriculture Reserve. That notice was followed by a meeting about the synthetic rink with the Director of Permitting Services, earlier this week. So far, there has been no word on when the next meeting may take place.

Five days ago, Kohn announced a GoFundMe page to “Save Mel’s Rink.” That fund has raised over $4,300, as of Jan. 8th.
