Meet Hannah Myers

First Week of Camp!

My name is Hannah Myers, and I am a junior at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, where I am majoring in English with two minors in Vocal Music and Women, Gender, and Sexuality studies. My focus is in public relations and communications.

This camp has definitely rekindled my love for film. I hadn’t touched a camera or used an editing suite in two years until I began work with MCM and Docs in Progress on this summer camp for kids. Being with the campers and with my fellow film lovers has renewed my ability to recognize the intricacies within filmmaking and the technological aspects of the entire process.

In filmmaking, one’s imagination must be constantly active, coming up with different angles for the camera, further interview questions, and more ideas for B-roll. Being with this camp has made my imagination explode, especially when it comes to keeping up with these campers whose brightness and genuineness amaze me.

Even though the first day of this documentary camp was all introduction—a lot of talking and listening—the campers got more and more excited about what they were doing as time progressed. They got their hands on the equipment and got to put their skills to use on our production day this past Friday.

Production day amazed me: these kids were efficient, prepared, and flexible. We counselors were really only there to provide transportation, make sure they completed their checklist, and didn’t leave too much head room. I am certain this was the result of a lot of preparation before actually heading out to shoot on location. Preparation is an effort worth making, and I was glad these kids were getting to see their efforts result in a good production day.

I am looking forward to this second week of making documentaries with these campers. They will learn to edit their footage using Adobe Premiere and see the magic of what a great editing suite can make. They will march through the whirlwind of post-production with gusto, I am sure. Good luck!
