Meet Debra A. Thomas
In April 2015, the Potomac Valley Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will celebrate 30 Years of Service to Montgomery County. Meet Montgomery County Resident Debra A. Thomas, a phenomenal woman doing phenomenal work in Montgomery County as President of the Potomac Valley Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Under the leadership of Debra A. Thomas, the Potomac Valley Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. with over 160 members provides services to underserved communities and families in the county centered on Delta’s Five Point Programmatic Thrust — Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement. Debra oversees innovative award winning programs on financial literacy, entrepreneurship, homeownership; and youth mentoring programs for girls and boys ages 11-18.
Debra A. Thomas is also Chair of the March of Dimes’ 2015 March for Babies in Montgomery County. In her capacity as Chair, she will work to raise awareness and funds to advance the lifesaving research, education and programs at the core of the March of Dimes efforts to find causes and prevention for preterm birth, birth defects and infant mortality. Debra A. Thomas, the 2013-2015 President of the Potomac Valley Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is also a member of the Eastern Star, and the Chief Financial Officer for Women On The FrontLine For Jesus. Her commitment to public service began as a child in her hometown of Claxton, Georgia. Debra A. Thomas is also a military spouse who has lived in Rota, Spain, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and Almeida, CA. She joined Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc in Penscola Alumnae Chapter, Pensacola, Fl, in 2005. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Illinois and did her graduate studies in Business Administration at Webster University, St. Louis, Missouri. She is married to Clarence Thomas, Jr. CAPT, MSC, USN for 34 years and she is the mother of Dante and Rashida.

March for Babies in Montgomery County
Rockville, MD (January 7, 2015) — The March of Dimes announced that Debra Thomas, President of Potomac Valley Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, has accepted the role of 2015 March for Babies Chair in Montgomery County. She will play an integral role in raising awareness and funds to advance the lifesaving research, education and programs at the core of the March of Dimes effort to find causes and preventions for preterm birth, birth defects and infant mortality.
“Premature birth is the leading cause of newborn death. It affects one in eight babies in Maryland,” said Debra Thomas, 2015 March for Babies Chair in Montgomery County. “Many of our members and their families have been helped by the March of Dimes, and I’m committed to helping their important work continue.”
The March of Dimes is working hard to help women have full-term pregnancies and healthy babies. Last year, more than 500 people attended March for Babies in Montgomery County and raised over $135,000. Thomas has committed to raising approximately $30,000 in new revenue as part of this year’s March for Babies goal of $142,000. She will also focus on recruiting new companies to participate and lead the community in making a difference for the health of moms and babies.
“We are grateful for Debra’s commitment and excited to have her support of our mission,” said Jennifer Abell, Suburban Maryland Division Director for the March of Dimes Maryland-National Capital Area Chapter. “Her passion and commitment to helping babies will be a huge driving factor in the success of our event.”
