MD State Police Respond to Over 370 Crashes After Snowstorm

Maryland State Police responded to 372 crashes following inclement weather, from 8 a.m. Sunday until 9 a.m. Monday morning. Police also responded to 177 disabled or unattended vehicles and answered 1055 calls for service, according to a recent tweet.

The snow emergency plan is currently in effect for Montgomery County as of 5 a.m. Sunday for interstates 270, 370 and 495. Montgomery County residents are encouraged to stay off of the roads unless required to travel for work.

The snow emergency plan will go into effect on 1-31-2021 at 5:00 a.m. for interstates 270, 370, and 495 in Montgomery County.  The snow emergency plan requires the following conditions:

• Stay home unless your job requires you to travel (emergency responder, medical profession, snow removal, etc.)
• Maryland State Police will begin towing vehicles currently abandoned more than 24 hours before the storm’s arrival
• Once the snow emergency plan is activated for a particular county, abandoned vehicles will be towed immediately
• If you have to drive, ensure you are driving a vehicle equipped for snow travel
• Do not abandon your vehicle on a snow emergency route (interstate, Maryland or US route) without notifying Maryland State Police or the police agency responsible for that roadway
• If you have called a private tow to remove your vehicle, notify the Maryland State Police to avoid resources being dispatched to remove it
• If you are involved in a collision, move your vehicle from the travel portion of the roadway if possible and contact Maryland State Police
• Give snow plows room to work and do not try to pass a plow train
• If your vehicle is towed, contact the barrack or local police agency where it was abandoned with a full description (make, model, tag number and exact location)

Snow emergency plans are in effect for all counties except Wicomico and Worcester. The snow emergency plan in St. Mary’s County was also lifted at 10 a.m Monday. All vehicles on the roads must be equipped with snow chains or snow tires while the snow emergency plan is in effect.

Additional incidents will be reported by the Maryland State Police and Maryland Highway Administration as snow and ice continue throughout the day.
