MCPS Last Day of School Year to Cost Big Bucks
Sending students to school on Monday, June 15 will cost the school system between $600,000 and $750,000 more the average school day.
That’s the day, Montgomery County Public Schools has set to make up for the one snow day that has to be made up this year. State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lillian Lowery agreed to waive two snow days missed here due to weather, but the school system set June 15 as the day to make up the third day. Four other missed school days were already built into the school system calendar.
Interim Superintendent Larry Bowers estimated that day will cost the system up to $750,000 more for the schools to be open than on regularly scheduled school days, mostly due to personnel costs.
MCPS Spokesman Dana Tofig said students should expect final exams to be shifted back one day which will squeeze one more instructional day before students take them.
Whether students attend the final day of school on a Monday, is another question.
“We expect people to come when there is school,” Tofig said.
Interim Superintendent Larry Bowers on March 17 originally asked the State Board of Education to waive all three missed days citing the cost of the make-up days to the school system. Bowers said making up the three days would cost between $1.7 million and $2 million, mostly due to personnel costs.
On March 24, the Maryland State Board of Education gave Lowery the authority to grant waivers, but indicated they wanted to see districts try to make up at least some of the instructional time that was lost due to inclement weather.
To meet the State Board’s goal, Bowers revised the district’s request so that MCPS would receive a waiver of two days and would make up one instructional day in accordance with the contingency calendar. Dr. Lowery informed the district Monday afternoon that the revised waiver request had been approved.
The decision makes Monday, June 15 the last day of school for students.
