MCPS Students Head Back to School (PHOTOS)

firstdayofschoolIt’s back to school today for more than 154,000 students in Montgomery County.

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will celebrate the start of the 2014-2015 school year with a news conference at the new Wilson Wims Elementary School, 12420 Blue Sky Drive in Clarksburg.

Superintendent of Schools Joshua Starr and Montgomery County Board of Education President Phil Kauffman will join other local and state officials at the event.

Officials said the event will highlight continued growth in MCPS, as well as the district’s new technology initiative, commitment to environmental sustainability, and implementation strategies for the Strategic Planning Framework.

MCPS will open more than 200,000 square feet of new construction projects on the first day of school. In addition to Wilson Wims Elementary School in Clarksburg which is the county’s 202nd school, a newly revitalized and expanded Bel Pre Elementary School in Silver Spring opens today and teachers and students will welcome a large classroom addition at Waters Landing Elementary in Germantown.

Other new initiatives and programs this year:

– MCPS will launch a new technology initiative that will place about 40,000 Chromebooks and tablets in all MCPS schools. The rollout will begin with grades 3, 5, and 6, and with students in high school social studies classes
– New state assessments will be given to students in grades 3-8 and at the end of select high school classes. The new PARCC assessments will replace the Maryland School Assessments (MSA).
– MCPS will continue its environmental stewardship efforts, including the use of recycled paper trays in all cafeterias, replacing foam trays.

Finally, MCPS is asking parents to share their photos of the first day of school. For more schools info, visit the MCPS website.
