MCPS Reports Greater Diversity Among New Teacher Hires
Data from Montgomery County Public Schools shows more diverse hiring for the 2018-2019 school year.
Of the 903 new teachers hired by MCPS for school year, 38.8 percent were non-white, representing an 11.5 percent increase since 2015, when 27.3 percent of the 907 new teachers were candidates of color.
The school system cited research that shows that students, especially boys, benefit when teachers share their race or gender.
School Superintendent Jack Smith, in a statement, said that as the county becomes more diverse, the school system needed to recruit diverse teacher applicants.
Of all 13,698 MCPS teachers: 72.76 percent are white; 12.35 percent are black/African American; 7.08 percent are Hispanic; 6.02 percent are Asian and less than 2 percent are American Indian, Pacific Islander, or of two or more races.
We talked to MCPS spokesman Derek Turner about the findings:
They’re worried about diversity but not about whether they’re sexual predators. That makes perfect sense. MCPS is the Catholic Church with the cross or communion.
