MCDOT Wins Grant to Install Bikeshare Stations in Wheaton

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) has won a $300,350 Maryland Bikeways Program grant from the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) to establish a six-station Bikeshare network in Wheaton. The grant will cover the purchase of the stations and bikes and the installation of the stations.

“I would like to thank the Maryland Department of Transportation for their partnership and support of Montgomery County’s Bikeshare program,” said County Executive Ike Leggett. “This is the second grant from MDOT for Bikeshare that MCDOT has received in the last three years. The grant will help us expand our access to Metrorail in an area targeted for revitalization. We are committed to embracing cutting edge solutions, such as Bikeshare, as we expand travel alternatives throughout the County to create a balanced and comprehensive transportation system.”

A Bikeshare network in Wheaton is expected to contribute to the community’s revitalization as a bikeable, walkable, smart growth community. MCDOT is leading the effort to replace the County-owned Wheaton Triangle Parking Lot with a government office building, town square and underground public parking to boost Wheaton’s economic development, contribute to its renewal and improve environmental quality.

Once MDOT approves the final project workplan later this fall, MCDOT will order the Bikeshare stations. Delivery typically takes about five to six months. Staff expect the stations to be installed by the end of 2016.

MCDOT has installed a 51-station Bikeshare network inside the Beltway in Friendship Heights, Bethesda, Medical Center, Takoma Park and Silver Spring and in the in the Rockville and Shady Grove/Life Sciences Center areas.
