May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (PHOTO & VIDEO)

The Montgomery County Council recognized May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month at a Council session on Tuesday.

Council Vice President Roger Berliner presented the proclamation to members of the County’s Asian Pacific American community.Asian-PacificAmericanHeritageMonthBerlinerStanTsaiSpeaksA 3-3-16

“Our county is truly blessed by its extraordinary diversity…It is one of our greatest strengths,” Councilmember Berliner said. “The Asian Pacific American community adds to that strength..and it is one of our fastest growing communities. Today we honor the rich history and society and culture of the rich history of the Asian Pacific American community.”

Stan Tsai is the co-chair of the County’s Asian Pacific American Advisory Group.

“We are honored to be here to accept the proclamation from [the] Council. It’s our honor and also it’s very important as a community we know that the County Council recognize [the] importance of our contribution and our culture and our heritage. We appreciate the council doing that and we look forward to work together to make the county an immigrant friendly county,” Tsai said.

According to U.S. Census data, Asian-Americans account for 15 percent of the population in Montgomery County. You can watch Councilmember Berliner’s remarks along with interviews from those who attended the proclamation in the MyMCMedia Extra video below.
