Maryland’s COVID-19 Positivity Rate Drops Below 6%; Montgomery County Cases Near 14,000

Wednesday morning the Maryland Department of Health reported 13,819 cases of COVID-19 in Montgomery County, which is a 0.8% increase from the 13,709 cases reported Tuesday.
Since the first case in March, 664 county residents have died from COVID-19. This is an increase of six deaths since Tuesday, according to the health department. The number of probable deaths is 40.
Montgomery County has seen more deaths due to COVID-19 than any other jurisdiction in the state. Prince George’s has lost 623 residents, the second-highest number in the state.
The positivity rate of 7.57%, reported Wednesday by the state health department, is the second-highest in the state, behind Prince George’s at 10.07%. The state calculates the positivity rate using the average rate for seven days. Montgomery County on Tuesday reported a positivity rate of 7% based on a rolling three-day average.
Maryland COVID-19 Statistics
As of Wednesday morning, there have been 62,969 confirmed cases throughout the state. That is an increase of 560 cases, or 0.9%, in the last 24 hours. COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 2,866 Marylanders, 15 since Tuesday.
Currently, 702 Marylanders are hospitalized with COVID-19, which is 40 fewer than Tuesday. Of those patients, 283 are in intensive care, which is one fewer than Tuesday.
There are fewer than one thousand Marylanders hospitalized with COVID-19 for the tenth day since April 9.
The state’s positivity rate dropped below 6% for the first time. At 5.81%, this is the tenth day the rate remained below 7%.
A total of 18,017 cases and 1,176 deaths involve the state’s African American community. This is 14 additional deaths since Tuesday’s report.
