Maryland Vehicle Theft Prevention Council Offers Vehicle Theft Prevention Tips

In honor of National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month,  the Maryland Vehicle Theft Prevention Council is teaming up with the Maryland State Police to inform motorists of steps to avoid having their vehicles stolen.

According to the theft prevention council, a car is stolen every 40 minutes in Maryland and every 45 seconds in the United States.

At least 50 percent of the vehicles stolen had the keys inside the vehicle, while 60 percent of the vehicles stolen were left unlocked, according to a news release. In addition, more than half of vehicle thefts occur at night.

Here are some steps Marylanders can take to prevent motor vehicle theft:

  • Close and lock all windows and doors when you park.
  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • Do not leave the area while your vehicle is running.
  • Do not leave your keys in your vehicle.
  • Always stow away your valuables.
