Maryland State Police Tackling Underage Drinking With ‘Lose the Booze’ Campaign

As senior week and summer vacation approaches, officers with the Maryland State Police are increasing their efforts to tackle underage drinking with its “Lose the Booze” campaign.

“The idea is that this time of year, kids are out of school, colleges are out, people are graduating and going on vacation, so there’s more opportunity for people to drive impaired,” said Ron Snyder, spokesperson for the Maryland State Police.

Under the campaign, Maryland State Police is teaming up with local police departments and sheriff’s offices across the state to patrol the highways with more efforts on the Eastern Shore.

Individuals under the age of 21 cited for possession of alcohol could be fined up to $500. Anyone who supplies alcohol to underage individuals could be fined up to $2,500, according to Maryland state law.

“Our goal is to make sure that people who are heading to a destination, that they they get there safely,” Snyder said.
