Maryland Ranks 14th for Most Unemployment Claims Filed

Maryland ranked 14th among states when comparing the number of initial unemployment claims filed during the week of March 30, according to WalletHub, a personal finance website.

Marylanders filing for initial unemployment claims skyrocketed 4,227 percent, when WalletHub compared statistics during that as compared to the same week 2019.

During the first week in 2020, filings among Maryland residents jumped 2,598 percent as compared with that same time in 2019, according to WalletHub.

Louisiana ranked first as the state with the largest unemployment increase, followed by New Hampshire and Virginia.

Social distancing and stay at home orders caused many businesses to shut their doors or limit their hours. Many employees therefore became temporarily or even permanently out of a job, explained WalletHub.

During the week of March 30, more than 6.6 million people throughout the United States filed initial insurance claims.

When ranking states for the most aggressive measures in limiting virus exposure, the website ranked Maryland as 13th.
