Maryland Ranks 11th in Health Care Costs
Maryland ranked 11th in a survey that looked at the cost of health care in each state. Only 10 other states fared better than the Free State.
The study was completed by WalletHub, which offers credit scores and credit monitoring.
To develop Maryland’s ranking, WalletHub found that the state was the fourth least expensive. It also ranked Maryland 22 in access and 23 in outcomes. Each of the three scores combined to give the state its 11th ranking overall.
Alfred W. Redmer Jr., Maryland’s insurance commissioner, said he wasn’t surprised the Maryland ranked so well. For one, the state has a reasonable amount of competition among insurance companies.
And for decades, Maryland has had an all-payer health system, a hospital rate regulatory scheme that insists hospital charges fall below Medicare levels.
“We have highest quality health care delivery system in the country if not the world,” Redmer said. “The cumulative effect is we have pretty good access to affordable health care relatively speaking.”
