Maryland Comptroller to Honor WAU Students and Local Business Owner

Nok Kim, owner of Rainbow Coin Laundry, and Washington Adventist University business students will be recognized for their efforts in helping students in the Long Branch area.
Comptroller of Maryland Peter Franchot is scheduled to present a proclamation and the “Comptroller’s Medallion” on July 21 to Kim and WAU students in recognition of their Rainbow Tutoring program.
Kim said in an interview over the phone he is excited and happy about tomorrow.
The Rainbow Tutoring Program was an idea that grew after Washington Adventist University business students worked on creative solutions to help local business owners.
According to a news release, 38 students volunteered more than 3,700 hours during the 2014-2015 school year. The university’s Enactus Team organized ten projects in the area including a symposium on branding, strategic marketing, and social media efforts. Students offered a tutoring program for kindergarten to fourth-graders where children received an extra homework help while parents did their laundry.
Retailer Sam’s Club provided financial support through its “Step Up for Small Business” program that funded improvements in the laundry such as new painting, cleaning of the store, and rebranding the business.
The ceremony is scheduled to take place at 3 p.m. at the Rainbow Coin Laundry located at 8735 Flower Avenue in Silver Spring.
