Mary of Nazareth School Raises Money for Haiti (PHOTO)

Students at Mary of Nazareth Catholic School in Darnestown recently raised some money to help the island nation of Haiti, following the devastation of Hurricane Matthew.

Stevie Orsini, an eighth grade student at the school, spearheaded the Help Haiti campaign, which raised $2,600 from students who donated for “out-of-uniform” privileges.

The students then used their “out-of-uniform” privileges to recreate the Haitian flag as a display of solidarity. The entire student body assembled outside the school’s athletic building to create a living image of the Haitian flag. Students in prekindergarten and first grades wore white, kindergarten and second thru fourth graders wore red shirts, and fifth thru eighth students wore blue.

According to a news release, the money raised for Haiti will be donated to the school’s sponsoring parishes: St. Joseph of Carcasse and Our Lady of Visitation Gonaives. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds will be used to purchase book bags and school supplies for ten Haitian children at Christmas thru Life Connection Mission, an organization dedicated to bringing hope and opportunities to Haitian children and adults.
