Marchers Show Support for Police in Rockville (PHOTOS & VIDEO)

A small group braved the cold weather Friday afternoon in Rockville to show their support for law enforcement officers on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

The group of about a dozen people walked several blocks in downtown Rockville holding signs of support for the police. Allie Frishkorn organized the rally she said was to counter recent national protests sparked by police-involved deaths in Ferguson, MO and New York City.

According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, in 2014 126 officers lost their lives in the line of duty. That’s up 24 percent from the prior year, according to the organization.

The marchers released 126 balloons in Rockville representing each of those officers with a promise there would be less balloons next year.

Rockville Police Chief Terrance Treschuk said Friday’s rally is a “morale booster” for his officers.

“Public safety is a tough job in today’s world. And you want to be appreciated,” he said.
