Man Killed Trying to Cross I-270

Maryland State Police have identified the man who died Monday trying to walk across I-270.

Tyrone Alonzo Jones, 36, was hit by a dump truck about 12:15 p.m. as he was crossing the highway, just north of Germantown Road, Maryland State Police said.

Police said they received a call that a man appeared to be standing in the middle lane.

Within minutes, emergency services called that the person was in critical condition. Emergency medical personnel arrived and took the person to Washington MedStar Hospital in the District.

Jones was declared dead at 1:16 p.m. at the hospital, police said. Troopers made notification to the Jones’s next of kin.

The driver of the dump truck, John Melvin Ruthvin Sr., stayed on the scene for an inspection by units from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division. A Collision Reconstructionist responded to the scene to complete the investigation.  Tyrone Jones was declared deceased at 1:16 p.m. at the hospital. Troopers made notification to the Jones’s next of kin.

According to tweets from Pete Piringer, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, a helicopter was requested to take the patient to the hospital but it was subsequently canceled.
