Man Killed Crossing Colesville Road in Silver Spring

A 49-year-old Washington, D.C. man was struck and killed crossing Colesville Road in Silver Spring early Saturday morning, Montgomery County police said.

The driver left the scene of the collision and was found by a county police officer, a police statement said. The driver, a 30-year-old woman from Laurel, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.

No formal charges have been brought against the driver at this time, police said. Formal charges, if any are to be brought, will be placed once the collision investigation is complete, police said.

The pedestrian–Donald Morgan Jr., 49, of Tuckerman Street NW –was struck before 2:30 a.m., at Colesville Road and Fenton Street, police said. He was “in the area of a marked crosswalk on a Fenton Street,” police said. Fire and Rescue personnel, as well as police officers, responded to the collision.

First responders tried to save Morgan’s life at the scene. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital where he died of his injuries, according to the police statement.

Witnesses saw the driver stop after the collision, exit the vehicle, and then leave the scene, police said. Witnesses were able to provide responding officers with a description of the car, including the license number, and a description of the driver, police said.

The description of the car and driver were broadcast to officers. An officer observed the vehicle traveling northbound Georgia Avenue just south of Colesville Road and initiated a traffic stop. The driver was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.
