Update: Takoma Park Police Identify Officer in Shooting

Update, July 30: Takoma Park police have identified the officer involved in a Wednesday shooting as Sgt. Charles Hoetzel, a 10-year veteran.

Police said he has been placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation, following the department’s protocol. He is assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division and works in the Special Assignment Section.


Update, 1:55 p.m. Thursday: New details have been released about the shooting that took place in Takoma Park on Wednesday night.

The on-duty officer, who has not been named, chased a man from the city into Washington, D.C., according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police Department. The chase ended inside the District when the man shot at the officer. The officer returned fire, hitting the man, D.C. police said. The shooting took place about 7 p.m. in the 200 block of Sheridan Street NE, police said.

The man has been identified as Kenneth Carroll, 19, of Northeast D.C., police said. Carroll was charged with assault on a police officer while armed and carrying a pistol without a license, police said.

Both the officer and Carroll were taken to local hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Police said Carroll’s weapon was recovered from the scene.


Original post: A Takoma Park police officer shot a man about 7:30 Wednesday night, a police statement said.

Police said someone shot at the officer and missed. The officer fired back and hit the shooter, police said. The shooter was taken to a hospital.

Takoma Park police said the Metropolitan Police Department in the District would investigate the shooting.
