Man Dies by Suicide in Jail Cell

The man who was convicted for killing his pregnant fiancée died by suicide in his cell at a Montgomery County lockup Wednesday, a Montgomery County police statement said.
Thierry Kinshala Nkusu, 35, had used a bed sheet to suspend himself, police said. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore ruled the cause of Nkusu’s death a hanging and the manner of death a suicide, police said.
On Monday, he had been found sentenced to life without parole in the woman’s murder, according to online court records.
Nkusu was being held at the Montgomery County Department of Correction and Rehabilitation at 22880 Whelan Lane.
Correctional staff found him unresponsive during a routine welfare check about 6 p.m. Wednesday, police said. The staff began life-saving efforts, and summoned fire and rescue personnel; Nkusu was unable to be revived, police said.
Police said Nkusu had left several handwritten suicide notes, police said.
Nkusu’s body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy.
In April, a jury found Nkusu, formerly of Takoma Park, guilty in the April 27, 2016, death of Maria Mbunga. At the end of the trial, Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said Nkusu did not want the financial responsibility of taking care of the baby Mbunga carried.
According to the statement of charges, Mbunga was stabbed at least eight times, with wounds in her neck, chest and stomach.
