Man Charged In Assault on Officer

Montgomery County police are investigating an incident in Damascus where a 34-year-old man is alleged to have assaulted an officer with a long gun.

According to police, on Oct. 29 at 5:19 p.m., patrol officers were dispatched to a residence in the 24100 block of Newbury Road after a woman called 911 to report that her daughter’s boyfriend had become violent and was damaging the house. According to police, the caller and her daughter were able to leave the house prior to police arrival.

Police say, when the first officer arrived, he observed a suspect armed with a long gun exiting the front door. The officer then discharged his handgun. Following that, the suspect put the gun down, additional units arrived, and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident. The suspect was not injured.

Detectives have charged Michael L. Roberts, age 34, of Newbury Road in Gaithersburg for the assault. Police said Roberts was charged with one count of first-degree assault and one count of reckless endangerment. He has been released on bond.

As is standard procedure, the involved officer, a 9-year veteran of the department, has been placed on paid, administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation.
