Major Retailers Remove Redskins Apparel from Stores

Days after the Washington Redskins announced that a formal review of the team’s name was underway, major retailers have responded. Beginning this week, Target, Walmart and Dick’s Sporting Goods have stopped selling the team’s merchandise.

These moves were precipitated by the NFL team’s major sponsors FedEx, Pepsi and Nike asking the team to change its name, which some consider offensive. Nike has also stopped selling the team’s gear.

“In light of recent events around our country and feedback from our community, the Washington Redskins are announcing the team will undergo a thorough review of the team’s name,” the team said in a statement last week. “This review formalizes the initial discussions the team has been having with the league in recent weeks.”

The Redskins are expected to announce a new team name before the start of the 2020 football season, which is scheduled to kick off in September, pending a COVID-19 delay. The Athletic recently reported that Nike is expecting an announcement soon “because it would take time for them to remake the jerseys and provide them to distributors.”

Jersey sales figure to skyrocket for the Washington franchise as soon as a new team name is announced, as often happens with new uniform releases for professional sports teams.
