Major General Salisbury Headlines Memorial Day Observance (Photos)

Major General (retired) Alan B. Salisbury will spoke at Gaithersburg’s Memorial Day Observance on May 30 at 11 a.m. at Christman Park, 304 West Deer Park Road. Mayor Sidney Katz, the city council, city staff, guests and the public paid tribute to Gaithersburg residents who died in the line of duty serving our country.

Major General Salisbury is a 1958 graduate of West Point. He completed a nearly 30-year career in the Army in 1987 as commanding general of the U.S. Army Information Systems Engineering Command. His decorations include two Bronze Stars and the Distinguished Service Medal. General Salisbury is currently Chairman and CEO of the Code of Support Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bridging the gap between civilian and military America. The patriotic ceremony included words and music to commemorate the occasion and a solemn wreath-laying ceremony. The invocation and benediction was delivered by Chaplain Barry Metzger, Commander, United States Navy. Chaplain Metzger is currently stationed at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and has received the Meritorious Service Award for his service as Regional Chaplain for Naval Region Korea. At the event guests will be invited to fill out a card for the city’s Book of Tribute, honoring friends and family members who serve. A representative from the Gaithersburg Community Museum was present to accept worn or damaged U.S. flags, which will be retired by American Legion Post 86 as recommended by U.S. Flag Code.

Christman Park, named for Lt. William J. Christman III, a Gaithersburg resident who was killed in Vietnam, is located at 304 West Deer Park Road in Gaithersburg.
