Lt. Gov. Brown to Address Silver Spring Group

Lt. Governor Anthony Brown will address attendees at the screening of “American Winter” at the AFI Silver Theater today (May 29).  The event, co-hosted by the Governor’s Partnership to End Childhood Hunger in Maryland and Montgomery County Councilmember Valerie Ervin, will bring attention to the efforts to end childhood hunger. “American Winter” tells the stories of eight families struggling with economic challenges and hunger.

Lt. Governor Brown has made ending childhood hunger in Maryland a top priority.  Maryland has helped at-risk students receive good meals at school and has invested to make food more accessible for families facing tough economic challenges.

Ending childhood hunger is also an important part of ensuring that all of Maryland’s children have a chance to thrive and succeed in school. A recent report found that schools participating in Maryland Meals for Achievement – the state’s program which provides free breakfast in the classroom to all students at select high-need schools – are seeing a 7.2 percent lower rate of chronic absenteeism and are up to 12.5 percent more likely to achieve proficiency on standardized math tests.
