We Love Weekends: Montgomery County Planner for Aug. 17-19

This is the last weekend to enjoy the  Montgomery County Agricultural Fair at the fairgrounds in Gaithersburg. It’s also the last weekend to purchase selected items tax free during Maryland’s Tax Free Week which ends Aug. 18.

Friday, Aug. 17 

Montgomery County Agricultural Fair This is the county’s 70th agricultural fair and this year’s theme is “A Tradition to Treasure.” The fair continues through Saturday, Aug. 18.  Fair hours are 10 a.m. to midnight daily. Twelfth Night The National Players preview William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night before they take the show on the road. Friday, Aug. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Olney Theatre Center, 2001 Olney-Sandy Spring Road. olneytheatre.org. Pay-What-You-Can sales open at 5 p.m. Donations accepted.

The Pirates of Penzance Chicago-based theater company, The Hypocrites, present an immersive and family-friendly version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance. The audience may sit on-stage and move around the set as the play unfolds. Through Aug. 17 at Olney Theatre Center, 2001 Olney-Sandy Spring Road, Olney.  olneytheatre.org. $30 – $74.

BlackRock Art Exhibits  Two exhibits are currently on display. The Kay Gallery exhibit titled Transcolorations includes works by Jon Malis which explore how computers interpret color.   The Natural Abstractions solo show by Julius Kassovic is on display in the Terrace Gallery. Both exhibits continue through Aug. 25. Both Malis and Kassovic will discuss their work and lead a gallery tour Aug. 25 at 1 p.m. BlackRock Center for the Arts, 12901 Town Commons Drive, Germantown. blackrockcenter.org. Free.

 

Saturday, Aug. 18

Tinker Bell  Directed by Nick Olcott, this adaptation for the stage by Patrick Flynn tells the story of Peter Pan from Tinker Bell’s point of view. Recommended for all ages. Through Aug. 26 at Adventure Theater at Glen Echo Park, 7300 MacArthur Boulevard, Glen Echo. adventuretheatre-mtc.org. $19.50.

Sunday, Aug. 19

Bankshot Basketball for All  Learn a family-friendly game of basketball that everyone can play. Bankshot is an inclusive way to play basketball that brings players of differing ability and fitness together.
