Local Organizations Partner to Host Bystander Intervention Training to Combat Hate
Hate-based incidents across the region is why a local group, Showing Up for Racial Justice Montgomery County Chapter, is teaming up with the Montgomery County Civil Rights Coalition and Impact Silver Spring, for a series of active bystander intervention trainings.
“This was a request after a woman approached us,” Danielle Ring, SURJ member, said. “Her brother-in-law was visiting in town [Silver Spring] for business meetings and was harassed on the train because he was Muslim.”
Participants will be provided with hands-on training and walked through a list of scenarios with an instructor from the Montgomery County Civil Rights Coalition.
The training will begin with a conversation on the theory of nonviolence followed by a series of real-life scenarios to help participants process what hate-base incidents or crimes look like.
The class on July 25 in Silver Spring is at capacity but interested residents can sign up for the waiting list by clicking here.
The next class is available on July 30 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Open Door Metropolitan Community Church, 15817 Barnesville Rd in Boyds.
