Local College Student Wins Wheaton Arts Parade and Festival Poster Contest
A local college student was announced as the winner of the annual Wheaton Arts Parade and Festival poster earlier this week.
Mirian Fuentes-Romero, a Takoma Park resident and student at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), was selected as the winner and her design will be used for the September festival that highlights the arts in the Wheaton community.
Fuentes-Romero became interested in graphic design after taking a digital art class at Montgomery Blair High School. Her parents are from Guatemala and she’s a first-generation American, according to a press release from the county.
The third-year college student is majoring in graphic design with a concentration in film and video. She received a cash prize of $300 for her winning design. MICA will also receive $100 for art supplies.

The winning prize was donated by Los Chorros, a Salvadoran restaurant in Wheaton and founding sponsor of the arts parade and festival.
The contest was open to Montgomery County high school and college students.
“The Wheaton Arts Parade is a day for residents, artists, businesses and civic organizations to walk together to celebrate art and Wheaton’s diverse community. At the end of the art parade, the community gathers at a festival of performances, art exhibits, and food,” the press release said.
The event is scheduled to take place on Sunday, Sept. 19 in the Wheaton Triangle and in the new Downtown Wheaton Marian Fryer Plaza.
