Local Author George Pelecanos Book Talk

Internationally acclaimed local author George Pelecanos will discuss and read from his book “Hard Revolution” on July 31 at a benefit for the new Silver Spring Library to be held at Eastern Village Cohousing, 7981 Eastern Ave., in Silver Spring beginning at 7 p.m. in the meeting room. Proceeds from ticket sales will support an Early Literacy Center planned for the new library, which is scheduled to open at the end of this year. The event is sponsored by Friends of the Library, Silver Spring Chapter.

A Silver Spring resident and author of 20 novels set in and around Washington, DC, Pelecanos will discuss how he came to write the book and will read several passages set in downtown Silver Spring circa 1959. A book signing will follow the reading. Books will be available for sale, or attendees may bring their own.
The Early Literacy Center, the first space of its kind in the Montgomery County Public Libraries system, will provide a state-of-the-art interactive area to help children acquire the pre-literacy skills that will lay the foundation for their work in school. It will feature interactive panels, modules and pods that young children can explore along with an adult family member or caregiver. Named by Esquire magazine as “the poet laureate of the DC crime world,” Pelecanos has received the Raymond Chandler award in Italy, the Falcon award in Japan, the Grand Prix Du Roman Noir in France, and the Hammett Award in the United States. He has written for “The New Yorker,” “The New York Times,” “The Washington Post,” “GQ,” “Sight and Sound,” “Uncut” and “Mojo,” among other publications. His short fiction has appeared in Esquire, Playboy, and the collections “Unusual Suspects,” “Best American Mystery Stories of 1997,” “Measures of Poison,” “Best American Mystery Stories of 2002,” “Men From Boys” and “Murder at the Foul Line.” He was also a producer, writer, and story editor for the acclaimed HBO dramatic series “The Wire” and was nominated for an Emmy for his writing on that show. He was a writer and co-producer on the World War II miniseries “The Pacific” and most recently was an executive producer and writer on the HBO series “Treme,” shot in New Orleans.

Ample parking is available in the Kennett Street surface lot and parking garage. Eastern Village Cohousing is also within walking distance of the Silver Spring Metro station.

Tickets are $50 each and include wine, beer, non-alcoholic beverages and light snacks. Seating is limited; early purchase is recommended. Tickets will not be available at the door.
