Let YOUR Voice Be Heard!

It was one of those events that touched the life of every Montgomery County resident: the ‘derecho’ storm that slammed through the region earlier this month. Where I live in Kensington, downed trees toppled across roads, cars and houses… power was out for days, and after years of outages, my family’s trusty refrigerator just couldn’t take it anymore and had to be put out to pasture. Bored kids and some lost food was about the worst the Reineke’s had to face… this time.

One thing I wanted to know as I was sitting there in the dark was this: how bad is this? Maybe the storm was just particularly intense in my community, and the rest of the county just got a little wet. And as the power was restored and I could watch the local news again, I wanted to see more videos and photos, and hear more stories, of what my fellow residents are experiencing that couldn’t be included in a traditional newscast.

We at MCM are working on just that.

Our new website, mymcmedia.org, has been designed for the expressed purpose of allowing YOU the ability to contribute your visuals and blogs. For the first time, Montgomery County residents can engage with each other and share what’s going on around them. And our own MCM team of producers and staff are generating content specific to Montgomery County and putting it onto the website. That combination is a unique resource for all of us to use and share.

As future storms create more havoc in our communities, and we all look to PEPCO and other service providers to handle these challenges, I hope you will use mymcmedia.org as a resource to reach-in and be part of the exchange of news & information about Montgomery County. Take one of our Citizen Journalism classes… log onto mymcmedia.org and learn how to become a blogger. Don’t just leave it to the old media organizations to do the reporting: you have an important role to play as well. Be a part of the story and let YOUR voice be heard!
