Leggett Receives Humane Award

The Montgomery County Humane Society (MCHS) presented County Executive Ike Leggett its 2012 Humane Award in recognition of his efforts to make construction of a new animal shelter a reality.

Groundbreaking for a new Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center at the intersection of Muncaster Mill Road and Airpark Road, Derwood, took place in January 2012.

Expected to open in late summer 2013, the new facility will replace the current shelter built in 1975.

The new complex will expand the county’s ability to care for animals safely and hygienically, as well as serve as a public adoption center and community educaton resource for animal advocacy and care issues. MCHS has held the contract to operate the County shelter since the 1960s.

Leggett is a two-time winner of the award from MCHS, the first time in 1993. Joanne Hoffman, chair of the MCHS board of directors, and Cris Bombaugh, president and CEO of MCHS, made the presentation at the nonprofit’s 14th annual gala, the Love Ball, held this year for the first time at the Hilton Rockville.
