Leggett to Sign “Ban the Box” Legislation
Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett is scheduled to sign the “Ban the Box” legislation on Nov. 10 at 11 a.m in Rockville.
Bill 36-14 or “Ban the Box” aims to prevent employers to ask about an applicant’s criminal record until the end of the first interview.
According to a press release, the bill removes a barrier for people with criminal records to find employment. However, the law excludes people who hope to work in child care, teaching, or any other position where state or federal law requires a completed background check.
Montgomery County Councilmember Cherri Branson – lead sponsor of the legislation- along with Councilmember Marc Elrich, Councilmember George Leventhal, and County Corrections and Rehabilitation Director Arthur Wallenstein will join Leggett during the event.
