Leggett Takes Top Spot in Exec Race in Democratic Primary
It appears Ike Leggett has gotten the Democratic voters’ nod for another term as Montgomery County Executive.
A dismal 16.23 percent of eligible voters turned out to the polls. That’s just 102,263 Montgomery County voters from an eligible pool of 630,254. Leggett earned 37,047 of those votes or 45.46 percent, according to the unofficial results posted by the Montgomery County Board of Elections.
According to the board, 3,190 absentee ballots were returned. Those will be counted over the next two weeks starting on Thursday.
Challenger Doug Duncan, who was making another run for the seat he previously held from 1994 to 2006, captured 26,348 votes or 32.33 percent.
Montgomery County Councilman Phil Andrews, (D-Rockville, Gaithersburg) came in a distant third in the race with 18,091 votes or 22.20 percent.
“I think that we made a lot of progess in the campaign. The message was resonating and we did that with a largely volunteer-driven campaign,” he said late Tuesday night. “I am proud of the campaign.”
Andrews said he was not sure just yet about his future plans.
Leggett will face Republican challenger James Shalleck in the November General Election. Shalleck could not immediately be reached for comment.
