Lecture and Screening of “Lincoln” at BlackRock

Montgomery County Office of Human Rights presents a program with a screening of the film Lincoln on July 16 at 6:30 p.m. at BlackRock Center for the Arts, 12901 Town Commons Drive, Germantown. The program commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War’s Battle of Gettysburg. The event will also tie in the Juneteenth Celebration commemorating June 19, 1865. This was the day Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take possession of the state and enforce the emancipation of its enslaved persons.

The program will begin with a welcome and lecture by Montgomery College history professor Dr. Alonzo Smith. Dr. Smith will give a brief historical perspective of the war and the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. After Dr. Smith’s lecture, the movie will be aired, followed by a brief question and answer session and light refreshments.

While these events happened more than 150 years ago, their impact on social justice and equality is still being felt today in every aspect of our lives. This is an important program for people of all ages and I encourage families to join us for this entertaining and educational evening,” said OHR Director James Stowe.
